River School Farm
The River School Farm, at first glance, is just a venue. It is actually the very definition of the word ‘community.’ The best term to use is ‘Cohousing.’ “Cohousing is a type of intentional and collaborative housing in which residents actively participate in the design and operation of their physical space. Cohousing residents consciously commit to living as a community, yet all residents maintain their own private homes, which contain all the features of a conventional home.” For nearly 25 years, the Dancing River Community worked together to develop beautiful gardens and recreational amenities along the banks of the Truckee River for many people to enjoy as they visit Reno.
The River School Farm is located along the banks of the Truckee River on a beautiful site with colorfully landscaped gardens, an outdoor amphitheater, a stage, and a picnic area. Their facilities also include an outdoor prep area, a dance studio, and vegetable growing areas. This fine-looking farm is a model of sustainable, ecological gardening principles and design.
The Farm can accommodate families, school groups, and any other group interested in coming to learn more about organic gardening in the high desert and sustainable landscape design. They offer farm tours as well and can adjust their programs for each group size. Their standard tour covers year-round vegetable gardening, composting, greywater, raising bees, poultry, and goats, building with natural materials, and making recycled artwork.
