Bio-based foam insulation is a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based foams, made using lignin and vegetable-based curing agents. These natural inputs add flexibility and toughness to the final product. It is primarily used for noise abatement and shock absorption but is also suitable for general building insulation.
Suitable Climates: Performs well across a range of extreme conditions
Temperature Extremes: Operates effectively between -62°C to 93°C (-80°F to 200°F); some variants withstand up to 150°C (300°F). Avoid prolonged exposure above 93°C
Humid/Wet Climates: Closed-cell and hydrophobic; absorbs less than 2% water. Suitable for flood-prone areas, though extended exposure above 70°C (158°F) humidity should be avoided
Hot & Cold Climates: Thermal conductivity of 0.02–0.03 W/m·K supports year-round energy efficiency
General Weather Resistance: Chemically stable and aging-resistant, but requires UV protection for outdoor use
Benefits: Recyclable and biodegradable, potential for use in biomass energy generation, chemically resistant, improved mechanical properties, reduces fossil fuel dependency, good fire resistance and thermal stability, helps lower energy use and costs
Drawbacks: Limited large-scale production due to funding gaps, high raw material costs, material variability causing inconsistent performance, low mechanical strength and high flammability still under improvement, challenges with sustainable feedstock supply and natural filler compatibility
Application: Used in roofs, walls, and floors, especially where sustainable and low-impact materials are prioritized
