Cardboard

Sustainability:
Cardboard can be considered a decently sustainable thing to use in crafts, as it is a really good way to upcycle cardboard rather than throwing it out. There are, however, more sustainable options for cardboard if it can be replaced.
Potential Chemical Exposure:
Due to the types of glues used in the manufacturing process of cardboard, there is a risk of microplastic exposure. Many of these glues, especially hot melt glues, end up releasing harmful VOC's that contribute negatively to pollution and health. Since these glues contain polymers, they also ultimately contribute to microplastics as well when broken down.
Safe Handling Recommendations:
Some of the glues used for cardboard are made of synthetic materials can contribute to microplastic exposure. These seem to mostly include hot melt and PVA glues. The best way to avoid exposure to these glues is to cut off the ends of the cardboard that are attached, as the middle part of the cardboard is typically stuck together using a starch based glue which doesn't contain microplastics. There is also risk of exposure due to the dyes and tape that can be on cardboard, which again should be ripped off before use.
Eco-Friendly Alternatives:
Things like thick paper stacked together or cork could be good options to replace cardboard if preferred.

The best way to get cardboard is from old packaging in the house or from friends and family. Thinner types of cardboard from other types of packaing such as cereal boxes can also be used as a crafting material, though similar precautions may need to be taken.
