Foam sheets
Decorative Materials

Sustainability:
Foam is not a very sustainable material due to the fact that it is made usually of either polystyrene, polyurethane, or some other synthetic plastic material. These materials take a very long time to decompose and contribute to microplastics in the environment. The production of foam also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and VOCs in the environment.
Potential Chemical Exposure:
Craft foam discoloration could potentially release irritating chemicals, and inhalation of foam dust can expose the body to VOCs.
Safe Handling Recommendations:
Wear a mask when cutting through foam and keep foam projects indoors and in a cool, dry setting.
Eco-Friendly Alternatives:
PLA foam is biodegradable, but not readily available. Other accessible options for foam could be cork, fabric, clay, wood, cardboard, paper mache, sponge pieces, natural materials, or rubber depending on the craft.
Sources - DIY or Retail:
Foam sheets and alternatives can be easily purchased in many different kinds of stores.
