Sustainability:

There are some environmental issues that come up due to the fact that the extraction of natural clay permanently alters landscapes and contaminates water which effects aquatic ecosystems, and the manufacturing process also uses fossil fuels. However the clay itself does not contain any synthetic chemicals, release VOCs, and can be crushed well enough to not have any significant impacts in a landfill.

Salt dough or paper clay are also good options to consider using. These are also good alternatives to use if the facilities to fire natural clay are not available.

Many online and in person stores sell pottery grade natural clay, and alternatives can easily be purchased or made at home.
