Sealants and Resins

Sustainability:

Polyurethane is essentially a type of plastic coating, making it not a very sustainable option. The manufacturing process uses crude oil and natural gas, and releases VOCs. It can also leach chemicals into the soil, which then gets into groundwater.

Potential Chemical Exposure:

Polyurethane contains chemicals called isocyanates, which can be carcinogenic when the polyurethane is uncured. There is also risk of being exposed to VOCs.

Safe Handling Recommendations:

If using polyurethane as a sealant, be sure to use it in a well ventilated area and wear a mask and gloves. Minimize contact with the area it was used until completely cured.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives:

Natural oils and plant based polyurethane products are more eco friendly alternatives to use.

Many hardware and crafting stores sell natural finishing oils, and specific brands such as Ecoative, MycoWorks, and Ecoshield sell plant based polyurethane products.
