Sustainability:

Tempera paints are usually biodegradable, making them a more sustainable option in that regard. Paints that use natural pigments rather than synthetic ones are better options in terms of sustainability due to the fact that the production of these synthetic pigments can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Certain preservatives in tempera paints can also accumulate in aquatic systems.

Potential Chemical Exposure:

The preservatives in some kinds of tempera paints can cause contact dermatitis and irritate sensitive skin. Formaldehyde, for example, is a classified carcinogen that can be used a preservative, which are a cause for potential contact dermatitis.

Safe Handling Recommendations:

Tempera paint is significantly safer than other types of paint due to it being mostly made with non synthetic materials. It still however should be used in a well ventilated area, especially if using tempera paint powder, and hands should be washed after paint is used, and due to the preservatives found in the paint, if one has sensitive skin it is best to try and avoid direct contact with the paint.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives:

Choose tempera paints that use natural pigments and carry an AP seal, which means it is much less likely to have irritating preservatives in them. Watercolor, gouache, and other forms of natural pigments are some other water based paints to consider using.
